Pomona-Pitzer Wins Pair In Tucson

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Softball team blew out Grinnell 15-0 in its first game and held on for a 4-3 win over Denison in its second game of the day at the Tucson Invitational.

The wins enable the Sagehens to improve to 3-18 on the season. Grinnell falls to 0-7, while Denison sees its five-game winning streak snapped as it falls to 6-4.

Pomona-Pitzer jumped out to a 4-0 lead with two runs in the second and two in the third. Meagan Tokunaga led off the second inning with a double and Sofia Baig was hit by a pitch. After Lindsay McCord sacrificed the runners over, a wild pitch scored one and an RBI single from Katie Page (pictured) made it 2-0.

The Sagehens added two more in the third as Baig had an RBI single and McCord had a bases-loaded walk. Denison, though, pulled within 4-3 in the sixth on a two-run double from Rachel Laughlin and had second and third with nobody out, but Bianca Cockrell pitched out of the jam with a strikeout, an infield pop up and a groundout, and then allowed only a two-out single in the seventh before closing the door on her second win of the year.

The first game of the day saw the Sagehens score nine times in the first inning, then tack on four more in the second on their way to an easy 15-0 win over Grinnell. The top three batters in the order, Ashley Morello, Aryana Yee and Caitlyn Hynes, each singled and doubled in the first inning alone, while Tokunaga opened the flood gates with a three-run triple. Baig singled in the first and doubled in the second in her first two at-bats as well.

Eden Griffin went the distance in the circle for the Sagehens to get the shutout, allowing three hits over the five-inning game. She allowed leadoff hits in the first and second and a two-out single in the fourth, but only one runner reached second.

The Sagehens ended up 10-for-11 in the top three spots in the order as Morello was 2-for-2 with a walk and her replacement, Quinn Sheehy, added a single, Yee was 4-for-4 and Hynes was 3-for-4.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Willamette for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
