Claremont, Calif. - Freshmen Mae Coyuito (Makati City, Philippines) and Lea Lynn Yen (Fullerton, Calif. - pictured) earned singles wins, but No. 9 Middlebury swept doubles and the first two singles lines to get off to a 5-0 lead and earn a 7-2 win over No. 12 Pomona-Pitzer on Friday.
With the win, Middlebury improves to 5-2 on the season, while the Sagehens slip to 7-4 with the loss.
Coyuito broke a personal two-match mini-slump after starting out her career 8-0, earning a 6-2, 7-5 at No. 3 singles, capturing the final four games of the second set after being down a break to defeat Leah Kepping.
Yen had a strong comeback win at No. 5 singles, dropping the first set 6-4, but rallying from behind to take the second set 7-5 and then earning a 10-8 win in the pro-set tiebreaker for the third set. Junior Arthi Padmanabhan (Saratoga, Calif.) went to a third set tiebreaker as well at No. 4, but fell 10-5.
Senior Jamie Solomon (Saratoga, Calif.) and freshman Marie Fleming (Boston, Mass.) had the closest match in doubles at No. 2, but fell 8-6.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action tomorrow when it travels to CMS for a 2 p.m. match against the second-ranked Athenas.
