Box Score CLAREMONT, CA. – The Sagehens defeated Whittier with a score of 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon to advance to the SCIAC Championships.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens move on with a record of 15-1-2 overall.
The Sagehens ended with 12 shots with four shots on goal and the Poets ended with seven shots and four shots on goal.
The Sagehens (#1) and the Poets (#4) both came out strong in the SCIAC semifinal game. Throughout the first half, Pomona-Pitzer only allowed the Poets two shots on goal however the Sagehens only had one shot on goal. The only shot on goal in the first half came from Hannah Hong whose shot came in the 28th minute. Both teams struggled to create many scoring opportunities and ended the first half 0-0.
In the second half of the SCIAC semifinal, the Sagehens responded quickly with a series of free kicks and shots, maintaining pressure on Whittier's defense. In the 65th minute, the Sagehens' persistence paid off as the Poets accidentally scored an own goal off of a Sagehen corner kick, putting the Sagehens up 1-0. This lead added fuel to the Sagehens offense, and Brooke Bailey quickly followed up with a strong shot in the 66th minute but it was saved by the Poets keeper. Patricia DePalma was solid in goal once again for the Sagehens making key saves in the final minutes. The Sagehens held on to their narrow 1-0 lead, advancing to the SCIAC final.
