CLAREMONT, CA. – The Sagehens fell 1-0 to the University of Chicago on Thursday, with the Maroons scoring the lone goal of the match in the second half.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens start the season 2-1-0.
Pomona-Pitzer created several chances early, with Bailey Brooke recording two shots in the opening 12 minutes. Sabina Peterson Rajalingam also forced a save from Chicago goalkeeper in the fifth minute, while Imogen Jenkyn had two shots on goal later in the half. The Sagehens' defense kept Chicago off the scoreboard throughout the opening half. Patricia DePalma made several saves, including stops in the fifth, 14th and 25th minutes. Neither team was able to break through before halftime, sending the match into the break scoreless.
Chicago came out looking to take control in the second half, with DePalma making another save in the 49th minute. Peterson Rajalingam nearly gave the Sagehens the lead in the 58th minute, but her shot hit the crossbar. The Maroons broke the deadlock in the 65th minute to put Chicago ahead 1-0. Pomona-Pitzer continued to push for an equalizer late. Vivian Rojas Collins recorded a shot on goal in the 73rd minute that was saved by Kayari, but the Sagehens were unable to find the back of the net before the final whistle. Despite the result, the Sagehens' defense kept the match close throughout, with DePalma making multiple key saves to keep Pomona-Pitzer within reach. Chicago ultimately held on for the 1-0 victory.
