Box Score 2 CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team fell 2-0 to the Athenas in both game one and game two despite playing two solid games from start to finish. With the loss, the regular season comes to an end with the Sagehens earning the No. 4 seed coming into the 2023 SCIAC Postseason Tournament.
Pomona-Pitzer 0, CMS 2
The Sagehens and Athenas put on a defensive battle in game one of the doubleheader with the score remaining at 0-0 for much of the game. Emma Holt pitched a no hitter through three innings with the Athenas recorded their first hit of the game in the fourth inning with a hard hit ball between the third basemen and short stop. The Sagehens offense was also quiet for much of the contest with Devin Waddell hitting a single in the first inning and fourth inning with Kylie Liu recording a single in the third inning, accounting for the team's three hits through six innings.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Athenas put a runner on with no outs after a leadoff hit by pitch from Holt started the inning. The runner managed to steal second and later advance to third on a passed ball but a groundout, a strikeout and a great fielding play from Holt kept the Athenas off the board. On a 3-2 count, the Athenas hit a hard shot right back at Holt who got a glove on it and dished it out to Devin Waddell at first to escape the inning unscathed.
The Athenas finally broke the scoreless streak in the top of the seventh as they started the inning with a hard hit single through the left side before loading the bases with a single and a hit by pitch, bringing Kailey Newkirk to the circle to pitch. CMS managed to score off an error by the Sagehens followed by an RBI single to take a 2-0 lead. The Sagehens went down in order in the bottom of the seventh, falling to the Athenas 2-0 in game one of the doubleheader.

The Athenas jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with an RBI double to right field to start the game. The Sagehens attempted to respond in the bottom of the first inning with Amanda Robman recording a single before and error and a walk loaded the bases but a strike out and fly out ended the inning. Both teams went scoreless until the top of the sixth with CMS crossing home plate once more with an RBI line out to center field to take a 2-0 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer tried to mount a comeback trailing 2-0 but went down in order in both the sixth and seventh inning, giving the Athenas back-to-back 2-0 victories at Wig Beach Field.
