Sagehens Advance To SCIAC Tournament Final With 22-4 Win Over Occidental

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Lacrosse team advanced to the 2023 SCIAC Tournament Championship after their 22-4 win over Occidental in the SCIAC Semifinals on Wednesday afternoon at the South Athletics Complex.

Fiona Lewis led the Sagehens with six goals in the win while Caroline Worthington netted five and Sydney Landauer also netted a hat-trick with three. Maggie Sweeney added two goals to the total while Eloise Cherian, Gwynn Sullivan, Carly Sullivan, Ella Bradley, Ellie Kruse and Claire LeBLanc had one as well.

Pomona-Pitzer opened the game with three-straight goals from Sweeney, Worthington and Lewis before the Tigers netted their first goal of the game to make it 3-1 with just over seven minutes to play in the first.  The Sagehens ended the first quarter with two unanswered goals from Worthington and Lewis to take a 5-1 lead into the second. 

The offense picked up right where it left off for the Sagehens as they added four more to start the second quarter after Landauer, Lewis and Cherian found the back of the net to push the lead to 9-1.  Occidental got a few goals back after they scored back-to-back goals but Worthington ended the half for the Sagehens with her third to give Pomona-Pitzer a 10-3 lead at halftime.

The Sagehens came out in the second half and picked up their defense after they shutout the Tigers in the third but managed to still add one to their total with six more goals. Lewis, Kruse, Landauer and Worthington all netted goals in the third to give the Sagehens a comfortable 16-3 lead into the fourth.

With the game well in hand, Pomona-Pitzer went on to score 13-straight goals against the Tigers with six more consecutive goals before Occidental netted the final goal of the day with 2:20 left on the clock. Worthington, Sullivan, Bradley, LeBlanc and Sweeney all got on the scoresheet in the fourth quarter as the Sagehens coasted to the SCIAC Tournament Final.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next look to capture their second-straight SCIAC Tournament Championship as they host CMS on Saturday, May 6th at 7:00 p.m.
