Box Score CLAREMONT, CA. – A two-run bases-loaded single by Amanda Robman in the 11th inning gave the Sagehens a 3-1 victory over No. 1 seeded CMS on Friday afternoon at Athena Field.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens move into the winners' bracket of the SCIAC Tournament and await the winner of Redlands and Chapman tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.
The Sagehens were led by Robman who went 2-6 in the win including the two-run RBI in extra innings. Devin Waddell and Lauren Ziment also turned in multi-hit performances while Camille Creighton and Claire Sefkow had one hit each. Waddell got the ball in the circle for game one and pitched a beautiful game as she went the full 11 innings for the win, scattered 13 hits with three strikeouts as the one run was unearned.
A very low-scoring game where runs were at a premium to open the SCIAC Tournament. Both pitchers had outstanding outings and stayed out of trouble for the majority of the early innings. The Athenas would strike first in the bottom of the fifth after an errant throw on a steal attempt allowed the Athenas to go from second to home to steal the lead at 1-0.
The Sagehens battled back in their next at-bats as Emily Hurtado brought home Robman on a sacrifice fly as she beat a close play at the plate to even the game at 1-1.
Both pitchers got out of jams in extra innings, but the Sagehens found themselves in a prime situation with bases loaded and the top of their lineup at the plate. After the Athenas did a good job of getting two down in the inning, Robman stepped up with a big single to right field to plate the game-winning runs to give the Sagehens the edge over CMS late in the ballgame. Waddell stayed perfect on the mound with a 1, 2, 3 inning and the Sagehens opened their SCIAC Tournament with a big win over the host CMS.
Up Next: The Sagehens will next face the winner of the No. 2 vs No. 3 game at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow at Athena Field.
