Sagehens Complete Series Sweep Over Tigers on Saturday

LOS ANGELES, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team defeated Occidental 7-1 in game one of the day with Morgan Groves highlighting the offense with a two-RBI home run. Devin Waddell pitched five innings for the Sagehens in game one before Kailey Newkirk pitched the remaining two innings, denying the Tigers of any hits or runs with one strikeout. 

Pomona-Pitzer 7, Occidental 1

The Sagehens had two runners on in the first after walks from both Amanda Robman and Devin Waddell, but both were left stranded after a fly out and strikeout ended the inning. Pomona-Pitzer left one runner on in both the second and third but finally connected in the fourth inning. After Emily Hurtado reached on an error, Morgan Groves hit a home run to left field to put the Sagehens up 2-0 over the Tigers. Occidental was able to cut the lead to 2-1 with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth but Pomona-Pitzer got back to work in the fifth inning.  

Amanda Robman walked to start the inning and advanced to second after a single through the left side from Devin Waddell. Camille Creighton was hit by the pitch on the next at bat, loading the bases for Addie Wasikonis. Wasikonis ripped a double to left center that cleared the bases for the Sagehens, increasing their lead to 5-1. Wasikonis advanced to third base on a wild pitch and was later brought in by Morgan Groves who recorded an RBI sacrifice fly, putting the Sagehens up 6-1. The Sagehens had another dangerous opportunity in the top of the sixth with three-straight walks to load the bases but a pop up to second base kept the Sagehens off the board. 

Pomona-Pitzer scored once more in the seventh with an RBI single to right center from Devin Waddell, capping off the 7-1 victory in game one for the Sagehens.

Pomona-Pitzer 10, Occidental 1

The Sagehens continued to show well in the final game of the series as they scored four runs in the third inning to take an early lead. Back-to-back walks put runners on first and second before a single from Devin Waddell loaded the bases. An RBI single from Addie Wasikonis brought in the first run first the Sagehens before an RBI sac fly from Morgan Groves and two-RBI single from Bella Carreon put the Sagehens on top 4-0. The Tigers answered in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI single, but the Sagehens poured it on in the fourth. With bases loaded, Emily Hurtado and Addie Wasikonis both earned RBI walks before Morgan Groves ripped a two-RBI single up the middle. Claire Sefkow recorded an RBI single later in the inning. The Sagehens scored once more in the inning as an error from the Tigers resulted in Groves crossing home plate, giving Pomona-Pitzer a 10-1 lead. 

Kailey Newkirk made quick work of the fourth and fifth innings, facing just three batters in each as the Sagehens earned the 10-1 five inning victory. Overall, Newkirk pitched five innings with two strikeouts, three hits and one run.
