Sagehens Drop Doubleheader to Panthers on the Road

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ORANGE, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team dropped game one of their doubleheader with the Chapman Panthers 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. Kailey Newkirk pitched in game one for the Sagehens, allowing five hits and two runs with five strikeouts. Emma Holt pitched a full game as well with five hits, three runs, and eight strikeouts on the day. The Sagehens will be back in action on Apr. 21 when they travel to Whittier at 3:00 p.m.

Pomona-Pitzer 1, Chapman 2

The Sagehens had a good opportunity to score in the second inning after Camille Creighton was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Creighton advanced to second after a sacrifice bunt but was later thrown out at third base, on a fielder's choice ball before a fly ended the inning with two runners stranded.

The Panthers managed to earn a hit out of a bunt in the bottom of the third inning before a two-run home run put Chapman on top 2-0. The Sagehens had good opportunities to score again in the fourth and fifth inning, leaving five runners on base between the two innings. In both innings, the Sagehens had a runner on third but a line out in the fourth and strikeout in the fifth kept Pomona-Pitzer off the board. Pomona-Pitzer scored in the sixth inning after starting the inning with a double from Addie Wasikonis. Wasikonis later scored after Emily Hurtado reached first on an error by the third basemen that resulted in Wasikonis making her way across home plate to cut the Chapman lead to 2-1. The Sagehens made a comeback attempt in the top of the seventh with two outs after Devin Waddell was hit by pitch before stealing second. A hard line drive from Amanda Robman was caught at short stop, ending the game 2-1 in favor of the Panthers.

Pomona-Pitzer 2, Chapman 3

The Sagehens fell behind early as the Panthers capitalized on a first inning RBI groundout to take a 1-0 lead. Later in the third inning, a two-RBI double down the left field line extended the lead to 3-0. After four scoreless innings, the Sagehens responded in the fifth inning with a single by Claire Sefkow followed by a Chapman error that scored Shelby Hawkes. The Sagehens scored once more in the fifth with a sacrifice bunt followed by a Chapman error to cut the lead to 3-2.

Pomona-Pitzer managed to earn three hits in the seventh inning but a pop up and strike out ended the game 3-2 in favor of the Panthers.
