Box Score CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team earned a hard-fought 14-inning 3-2 victory over the Chapman Panthers on Friday afternoon. The highlight of the game for the Sagehens came in the bottom of the 14th with a walk-off error with Emily Hurtado hitting the ball hard to the third basemen to bring Addie Wasikonis across home plate. Devin Waddell was stellar in the circle, pitching all 14 innings with just two hits and two runs allowed while earning seven strikeouts. The Sagehens will be back in action tomorrow when they travel to Chapman for a doubleheader at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.
The Panthers struck first in the top of the first inning, capitalizing on a wild pitch to score from third base, taking an early 1-0 lead. The Sagehens tried to make an immediate comeback in the bottom of the first as Kylie Liu started the inning with a double to right center. Amanda Robman followed with a single to short stop, putting runners on first and third. Devin Waddell reached on fielder's choice that loaded the bases for the Sagehens. Camille Creighton also reached on fielder's choice with Chapman getting Kylie Liu out at home. With bases loaded, the Sagehens recorded a foul out and a strike out, ending the inning trailing 1-0 with three runners left on base.
Both teams went scoreless through the top of the fourth inning with Chapman recording the only hit since the first inning. The Sagehens started the bottom of the fourth with a single to center field from Addie Wasikonis before Lauren Ziment reached first on an error by the third basemen. After a fly out from Emily Hurtado, Wasikonis advanced to third with Ziment staying at first. On the following play, Ziment stole second, forcing the Chapman catcher to make a throw but no one was home at second, allowing Wasikonis to score with the ball rolling into center field, tying the game at 1-1 after four innings.
The Panthers and Sagehens went scoreless again through the fifth and sixth innings with neither team recording a hit. Devin Waddell continued to pitch a strong game, forcing the Panthers into a pop out and two groundouts, sending the Sagehens into the bottom of the seventh tied 1-1. Emily Hurtado started the inning with a fly out to short stop before Natalie Murguia hit a shallow single to right field to represent the winning run on first base. Bella Carreon laid down the sacrifice bunt to advance Murguia to second, bringing Kylie Liu to the plate with two outs. The Panthers made a quick trip to the circle to talk things over before dishing out an intentional walk to Liu, bringing Amanda Robman up to bat with runners now on first and second. After what seemed like an endless at bat between Robman and Chapman's pitcher Rose Malen, Robman hit a hard groundout to first base, sending the game to extra innings knotted at 1-1.
Waddell stayed in the circle in the top of the eighth inning, facing four batters, allowing one walk while forcing a fly out and two groundouts to keep the game locked at 1-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Camille Creighton delivered a single through the left side to represent the winning run. Claire Sefkow was brought in as a pinch runner with Addie Wasikonis laying down the sacrifice bat to advance Sefkow to second base with two outs. Sefkow was left stranded after Lauren Ziment struck out looking, sending the game to the ninth winning with Waddell remaining in the circle to pitch. Waddell faced another four batters with one walk, two pop ups and one fly out, keeping the Panthers off the board. The Sagehens went down in order in the bottom of the ninth inning, sending the game to the 10th inning tied 1-1. Both team's left two runners stranded in the 10th inning, but the Sagehens had the best chance with runners on second and third with two outs but a line out to third would send the game to the 11th inning. Pomona-Pitzer worked out of a tricky situation in the top of the 11th as Chapman laid down a sac bunt to get a runner on third before an error resulted in runners on second and third with just one out. Devin Waddell forced two more groundouts to keep the Panthers off the board. The Sagehens managed to get a runner on third base as well with a sac bunt but a ground out and fly out sent the game to the 12th inning.
After a wild pitch advanced the Panther's runner to third to start the 12th inning, Chapman broke the 1-1 tie with an RBI sacrifice fly to left field to take a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the 12th. The Sagehens chances were looking grim with in the bottom of the 12th as the Sagehens were down to their final out, but Amanda Robman delivered an RBI single to right field to tie things up at 2-2 to extend the game to the 13th inning. After three quick outs in the top of the 13th inning the Sagehens went back to work with Shelby Hawkes leading things off with a sacrifice bunt to move Devin Waddell to third base with one out. The Sagehens seemed well poised to earn the victory but after Addie Wasikonis laid down a bunt, Waddell was tagged out on the way to home plate which was followed by Wasikonis getting thrown out at second trying to squeeze an extra base out of the play. The double play resulted in the end of the inning, sending things to the 14th inning. After yet another four batters faced situation, the Sagehens went to the bottom of the 14th hoping for the game-winner.
After Lauren Ziment laid down the sacrifice bunt to move Addie Wasikonis to third base, Emily Hurtado reached first on an error by the third basemen for Chapman with Wasikonis scoring on the play to give the Sagehens the walk off 3-2 victory in a 14-inning marathon battle at Wig Beach Field
