Sagehens Win Season Opener Over Redlands, 26-2

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Lacrosse team opened 2023 with a 26-2 win over SCIAC opponent Redlands on Saturday morning at the South Athletics Complex.

The Sagehens were led by Sydney Landauer who had a game-high five goals in the win. Fiona Lewis and Taylor Glanville also notched hat-tricks with three while Maggie Sweeney, Steffi Larson, Grace Warner, Ella Bradley and Ellie Kruse had two goals each with Eloise Cherian, Carly Sullivan, Tess McHugh, Claire LeBlanc, and River Buechner chipping in with one.

Pomona-Pitzer got off to a fast start, with the Sagehens dominating possession and scoring the first six goals of the game. Buechner, Landauer, Lewis, and Kruse, all found the back of the with Landauer scoring two goals in just over a minute to put the Sagehens up 6-0.

The Bulldogs finally got on the board with a goal from Emily Webster at the 8:03 mark of the first quarter. However, the Sagehens responded quickly, with Kruse scoring her second goal of the game and Cherian adding another goal to make it 8-1. 

Redlands managed to score another goal on a free position shot from Webster, but the Sagehens continued to dominate. Bradley and Warner both scored goals to make it 10-2, and Maggie Sweeney, Landauer, Lewis, and Leblanc added goals in the final five minutes of the half to give Pomona-Pitzer a commanding 14-2 lead at halftime. 

The second half started much like the first, with the Sagehens continuing to control possession and score at will. Landauer, Sweeney and Glanville all scored early in the half to extend the lead to 17-2. Lewis and Ella Bradley scored goals at the end of the third quarter to make it 19-2 heading into the fourth.

The Sagehens' defense was equally impressive, holding the Bulldogs to just two goals for the entire game. Goalkeepers Julianne Louie and Ruby Loesch made several impressive saves, and the defense did a great job of pressuring Redlands' attackers and forcing turnovers.

As the game wound down, Pomona-Pitzer continued to add to their lead, with Larson, McHugh, Glanville, and Warner all scoring goals in the fourth quarter as the Sagehens opened up their 2023 season with a statement win over Redlands.
