Robman Highlights Day with Walk Off Single, Sagehens Split with Lutes

CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team opened the 2023 season in exciting fashion with an 11-10 walk-off victory over the Pacific Lutheran Lutes in a three-hour comeback battle. Amanda Robman led the team with three hits and 3 RBI's, including the RBI single to left field in the bottom of the seventh to give the Sagehens the victory. First year Kylie Liu went 2-3 at the plate and hit a solo home run over center. 

Pomona-Pitzer 11, Pacific Lutheran 10

The Lutes scored first in the top of the first inning with a double to right, but the Sagehens scored three in the bottom of the inning as Emily Hurtado hit a three-RBI double to right center, bringing in Kylie Liu, Devin Waddell, and Lauren Ziment, giving the Sagehens a 3-1 lead. 

Pacific Lutheran battled back in the second inning, tying the game at 3-3 but the Sagehens quickly responded in the bottom of the second with an RBI triple from Robman and RBI from Lauren Ziment, regaining the lead at 5-3. Pacific Lutheran scored seven unanswered runs from the third to the top of the fifth inning, putting Pomona-Pitzer in a tough hole heading into the bottom of the fifth trailing 10-5.  

The Sagehens scored one in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single from Hurtado, bringing in Liu to cut the deficit to 10-6. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Amanda Robman doubled to left to bring in Camille Creighton before Lauren Ziment recorded a SAC RBI to third base to bring in Adalee Wasikonis, pulling the Sagehens within two at 10-8. In the bottom of the seventh, Kylie Liu got the Sagehens started with a solo shot to center, clearing the outfield wall to cut the Lutes lead to 10-9. Wasikonis later recorded a SAC fly to right field that tied the game at 10-10 with Hurtado crossing home plate. After walking and advancing to third on the Wasikonis SAC, Natalie Murguai scored the winning run after Amanda Robman delivered in the game-winning moment with a single to left field, giving the Sagehens the 11-10 victory in their season opener.

Pomona-Pitzer 0, Pacific Lutheran 3

Game two featured a much faster pace with both teams going scoreless through the first five innings. Pacific Lutheran recorded two hits in the first, one in the second, and two more in the fourth before scoring two runs in the top of the sixth inning after a two-RBI home run. The Sagehens struggled at the plate in game two, recording their one and only hit of the game in the fourth inning off the bat of Devin Waddell who singled to center field. The Lutes were able to tack on one more run in the seventh with an RBI double to take a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, Lauren Ziment lined out to the second basemen which was followed by a fly out from Devin Waddell. Kylie Liu was hit by the pitch, putting on a runner on base, but the game came to an end after a fly out from Emily Hurtado
