Box Score LOS ANGELES, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer volleyball team completed the sweep (25-19, 25-20, 25-16) over Occidental on Friday evening on the road to advance to 8-4 on the season and 3-1 in the conference. Chloe Gill and Paige Mountanos led the Sagehens attack as the duo both recorded nine kills while Eleanor Nicholson dished out 16 assists with nine kills. The Sagehens will continue their conference road schedule with a match against La Verne tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.
Pomona-Pitzer benefited from three-straight attack errors in addition to an Eleanor Nicholson kill to start set one 4-0. The Tigers quickly responded with a 6-2 run to tie the game at 6-6 before working their way to an 11-10 lead. From there, the Sagehens went on a blistering 7-1 run with kills from Grace Fan, Ella Gardner, and Paige Wilson to take a 17-12 lead and force an Occidental timeout. Out of the break, the Tigers were able to go on a 4-1 run to pull within two at 18-16 but the Sagehens proved to be too strong as they ended the set on a 7-3 run to win it 25-19. The final run of the set saw kills from Grace Fan and Chloe Gill along with a block from Ella Gardner and Gill.
The Sagehens put the pressure on early in set two, starting the game on a 12-5 run with kills from Gill, Mountanos, Fan, and Cameron Hodges as well as a service ace from Paige Wilson. Occidental answered with four-straight points to pull within three at 12-9 but blocks from Hodges, Gardner, Fan, and Wilson kept the Tigers at bay as the Sagehens worked their way to a 17-12 lead. From there, the two teams traded points back and forth with the Sagehens extending their lead to 23-16 lead before the Tigers went on a quick 3-0 run to try to make things interesting. The duo of Paige Mountanos and Paige Wilson were able to kill the final two kills needed for the Sagehens to take set two 25-20.
Pomona-Pitzer continued to fly through the opening portions of the sets, this time starting the set on a 9-4 run as Kellan Hayes and Paige Mountanos earned the first point with a block before Hayes, Savanna Cespedes, and Wilson all earned kills. Eleanor Nicholson also played a key role for the Sagehens in the opening run as she recorded two service aces. The Tigers were able to go on a 3-0 run to cut the lead to 9-7 but the Sagehens quickly took momentum back with a 12-5 run, taking a convincing 21-12 lead over Occidental. The Tigers tried to mount a comeback with a 4-0 run, cutting the Sagehen lead to 21-16 but Grace Fan and Chloe Gill both picked up a kill before Cameron Hodges put on the finishing touches with two kills of her own to take set three 25-16.
