CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer women's volleyball fell in five sets (14-25, 29-31, 25-23, 25-22, 11-15) to Whittier College Saturday evening at home.
Season Impact: The result puts the Sagehens at 10-14 on the season, including 5-9 in SCIAC play.
Paige Mountanos paced the Sagehens with a team-high 16 kills to go with a career-high 28 digs.
Anna Krebs had 12 kills while
Tene Ariyo and
Samantha Grabb each posted 10.
Corrina Benson notched a team-high 29 digs.
Whittier took a 1-0 match lead after running away with a 25-14 set one win. Pomona-Pitzer responded in the second, extending the set after an Ariyo kill tied it at 24-24. A Mountanos kill and a
CC Porter block brought the Sagehens to set point, 28-27, but Whittier went on to take it, 31-29.
The Sagehens fought off the sweep in the third, as kills from
Charlotte Sekerka and Mountanos brought it to set point, 24-22. Mountanos later finished the 25-23 set three win with another kill. Pomona-Pitzer forced a fifth set after another strong fourth, as back-to-back kills from Grabb gave the Sagehens a 25-22 set four win.
Kills by Sekerka and Krebs helped put the Sagehens up 10-8 in the fifth set. But the Poets finished the frame on a 7-1 run to win it, 15-11, and take the match, 3-2.
