Battle for the Title
With the SCIAC Championship on the line, the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens and CMS Athenas met for the third time this season with the Sagehens holding a 2-0 advantage on the season. Pomona-Pitzer struck first with a Syndey Landauer goal nearly four minutes into the game. CMS responded minutes later to tie the game at 1-1 but Landauer found the back of the net again under a minute later to make it 2-1. To no surprise, the Athenas battled back and brought this game to another tie at 2-2 but Landauer capitalized on a free position shot to secure an early hat trick and put the Sagehens back on top at 3-2 with 4:44 on the clock, CMS was able to score two late goals in the first quarter just 27 seconds apart to end the first period with a 4-3 lead over the Sagehens.
After the two minute break, the Sagehens dominated the opening half of the quarter. Fiona Lewis, Maggie Sweeney, Hannah Gough, and Sydney Landauer all scored in the opening five minutes of the second quarter to give the Sagehens a 7-4 lead. After nearly five minutes of scoreless play, Lewis struck the back of the net once again to record her hat trick and extend the Sagehens lead to 8-4. CMS wouldn't go down without a fight as they scored three-straight to cut the Sagehens lead to one at 8-7. From there, Eloise Cherian and Carly Sullivan scored their first goals of the game to push the lead up to 10-7 with 1:36 left in the half. The Athenas found themselves in a man up situation and capitalized on the opportunity, scoring with just 14 seconds left to cut the lead to 10-8 at the half.
Out of the halftime break, the Sagehens got right back to work as Landauer connected with Lewis 40 seconds after the whistle to make it 11-8. CMS countered with a goal just over a minute later, but Sullivan connected with Gough before a Caroline Worthington goal boosted the Sagehens to a 13-9 lead with 8:29 left in the third. CMS scored the next two, including another man up goal but Regan Schunk ripped one in with 1:16 to go to put Pomona-Pitzer up 14-11 at the end of the third period. The Sagehens tallied just one goal in the fourth off the stick of Maggie Sweeney, but the damage had been done as CMS failed to make the comeback as Pomona-Pitzer earned the 15-11 victory to claim the 2022 SCIAC Postseason Tournament Championship Title. Although the Sagehens won by four, it wasn't without a scrappy battle in between the whistle as seven cards were given out on the night with five going against the Sagehens and two against CMS. Overall, there were 62 fouls with CMS ending the night with 30 while the Sagehens had the remaining 32 in a hard fought, physical Sixth Street Rivalry.
With the win, the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens keep their undefeated streak alive and advance to the 2022 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament.
