Box Score MEDFORD, Ma. – The Pomona-Pitzer lacrosse team saw their season came to a close as they fell to the No. 3 Tufts Jumbos 18-10 in the 2022 Division III Sweet Sixteen. Pomona-Pitzer's 18-1 record in the 2022 season is the program's best record in history. Coming into the game, the Sagehens were one of two undefeated teams left in the country across all divisions with UNC as the only other program with a perfect record. With 10 goals against Tufts, the Sagehens become just the third team this season to tally double-digits against the Jumbos. The Sagehens held an 18-11 advantage against Tufts on the draw control while the Jumbos outshot Pomona-Pitzer 38-22. The Sagehens were led by Fiona Lewis, Sydney Landauer, and Caroline Worthington as the trio all recorded two goals each while Eleanor Mackey and Sarah Casey each found the net once in their final game of their career.
Sweet Sixteen Battle
The Sagehens struggled in the early going as the Jumbos shot out to an early 6-0 lead. Fiona Lewis got the Sagehens on the board with 2:53 left in the first, scoring on a free position attempt to make it 6-1. The Jumbos were able to find the net three more times in the first to take a commanding 9-1 lead heading into the second quarter.
Pomona-Pitzer struck first in the second as Lewis scored an unassisted goal to make it 9-1 just 41 seconds into the quarter. Eloise Cherian kept things going with Pomona-Pitzer's third goal of the game, coming off a free position attempt with 13:43 left before the half. Tufts responded with two goals of their own, but Carly Sullivan connected with Grace Werner to make it 11-4. The Jumbos closed out the quarter on a 3-0 run, taking a 14-4 lead at the half.
Out of the halftime break, the Sagehens came out playing a much more disciplined game. Tufts was able to score the first goal in the third quarter, but Sydney Landauer scored back-to-back goals to cut the lead to 15-6. Tufts was able to add in one more goal in the quarter, but Sarah Casey drilled a free position shot into the back of the cage to make it 16-7 heading into the fourth quarter.
Tufts scored first once again to start the fourth quarter, but Caroline Worthington scored two free position attempts to make it 17-9. The Jumbos tallied once more but Eleanor Mackey scored the last goal of the game, giving the senior a storybook ending to a stellar career with the Sagehens. As the final whistle blew, the Sagehens season ended, falling 18-10 to Tufts but it wasn't without a fight. The Sagehens played a competitive second quarter with Tufts earning the 5-3 advantage in goals before taking 3-2 goal advantages in the third and fourth quarter.
Emily Vomvas faced 29 shots in goal and made 11 saves overall. Kate Immergluck led the team with five draw controls in her senior finale while also picking up one ground ball and causing one turnover. Overall, the Sagehens ended the night with 22 shots, 18 draw controls, eight clears, and 12 ground balls.
As mentioned, the Sagehens 18-1 overall record finishing in the Sweet Sixteen is the best season in program history. The Sagehens won a total of 25-straight games dating back Feb. 15, 2020.
