Box Score CLAREMONT, Ca. – For the fourth time this season, the Pomona-Pitzer lacrosse team defeated the CMS Athenas, this team defeating their Sixth Street Rival 18-6 in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. With the win, the Sagehens advance to the Sweet Sixteen where they will take on the No. 3 Tufts Jumbos in Medford, MA. on May 21 at 1:00 p.m. Fiona Lewis led the charge for the Sagehens in the Second Round as she ended the game with six goals, and one assists while Shoshi Henderson dished out six assists. With her six assists, Shoshi Henderson broke the NCAA Division III record for assists in a single game (88), tallying her 90th this season while also setting the program record for points in a season with a total of 132. Henderson is the second athlete this year to break the record as Emily Bruner from Rhodes College has also surpassed the former record.
Best in the West
Much like they've done all season, the Sagehens led from start to finish as they tallied the first goal of the game 31 seconds after the opening whistle with Fiona Lewis netting the free position shot to get things started. Caroline Worthington scored nearly a minute later to double the lead to 2-0 before Sydney Landauer and Eloise Cherian chimed in to make it 5-0 with 9:03 left in the first quarter. Grace Warner scored the next goal for the Sagehens to make it 6-0 before CMS finally answered with 7:37 on the clock in the first, making it 6-1. Pomona-Pitzer continued to pour it on, scoring three-straight with goals from Lewis, Claire LeBlanc, and Worthington. CMS scored off a free position shot with 3:13 to play in the first but Tess McHugh rifled one home to put the Sagehens up 10-2 at the end of the first quarter.
The Sagehens controlled possession in the second quarter but tallied just three goals as Landauer, Lewis, and Maggie Sweeney all found the net to make it 13-2 heading into the halftime break. Out of halftime, Lewis struck the back of the net twice to increase the lead to 15-2 before the Athenas answered with a goal of their own. Lewis responded promptly with her sixth goal of the evening with 4:25 left in the third but CMS scored the final goal of the quarter to cut the lead to 16-4. CMS would tally twice more in the fourth, but Grace Warner scored two unassisted goals to cap off the 18-6 victory for the Sagehens, giving them their 18th-straight victory.
