Sagehens Beat Tigers on Senior Day

Box Score

CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer lacrosse team clinched the Regular Season Championship with a 20-5 victory over Occidental on Saturday evening. The Sagehens were led by Shoshi Henderson as she dished out four assists and scored four goals of her own. Carly Sullivan also recorded a hat trick for the Sagehens while Caroline Worthington, Ellie Kruse, Tess McHugh, and Maggie Sweeney all added two goals each. The Sagehens will finish up the regular season on Wednesday, Apr. 27 with a road match against Chapman at 7:00 p.m.

How It Happened

Like much of the season, the Sagehens struck first and took an early lead as Claire LeBlanc scored the first goal of the game just under four minutes after the opening whistle. Carly Sullivan and Caroline Worthington followed in pursuit just minutes later to increase the lead to 3-0. In the last five minutes of the quarter, Tess McHugh and Shoshi Henderson both found the net as the Sagehens went up 5-0 heading into the second period.

Just under two minutes into the second quarter, the Tigers found the back of the net and found it again with 10:26 on the clock, cutting the lead to 5-2. Worthington got the Sagehens back on the attack with a goal, but Occidental responded with two more to cut the Sagehen lead to 6-4. The Sagehens turned up the heat with under five minutes remaining in the half, scoring five unanswered goals as Ellie Kruse, Henderson, Sullivan, and McHugh combined for five goals to take an 11-4 heading into halftime.

Out of the break, Pomona-Pitzer picked up right where they left off with Eloise Cherian and Maggie Sweeney both scoring a goal in the first five minutes of the second half. Eleanor Mackey, Sullivan, Henderson, and Emma Clark scored the remaining goals in the third quarter as Pomona-Pitzer increased their lead to 17-4. The Tigers scored a fifth goal in the fourth quarter, but the Sagehens dominated possession the rest of the way, seeing a goal from Henderson, Sweeney, and Asaka Mori to end the game with a 20-5 advantage over Occidental, claiming the Regular Season Championship.
