Box Score CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team earned their first SCIAC shutout of the season with a 1-0 home victory over the Whittier Poets. Katy Hurley hit the RBI single in the sixth inning to lift the Sagehens over the Poets. On the day, the Sagehens recorded five hits and no errors while Whittier recorded four hits and zero errors. Kailey Newkirk and Emma Holt both pitched well for the Sagehens with Newkirk allowing three hits while Holt allowed just one in her 2.2 innings. The Sagehens will be back in action tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. with a road doubleheader against Whittier.
How It Happened
Although scoreless for most of the game, both teams had chances early on. The Poets started out with a two-out walk followed by a stolen base, putting a runner in scoring position in the first inning. Newkirk hit the next batter putting runners on first and second, but Bella Carreon fielded a ground ball and dished it over to Taylor Lehner to get out of the inning.
The Sagehens were able to get at least one runner on base in each of the first five innings but stranded one runner in each inning. Pomona-Pitzer finally broke the scoreless stretch in the bottom of the inning. Devin Waddell got things started with a single to center field. Lehner then put down the sacrifice bunt to move Waddell to second. Katy Hurley then hit an RBI single through the right side that brought Waddell across home plate, giving the Sagehens a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Hannah Brajkovich was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second. Unfortunately, the Sagehens saw Julia Carreon strike out swinging and Deijah Bradley groundout to end the inning, stranding two runners.
The Sagehens wasted little time in the top of the seventh, facing just three batters with the Poets lining out twice and grounding out to end the game 1-0 in favor of the Sagehens.
What's Up Next
As mentioned, the Sagehens travel to Whittier tomorrow for a doubleheader at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.
