Box Score 2 COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team suffered two losses on the final day of the NFCA Leadoff Classic, falling to No. 19 Christopher Newport 11-0 in five innings and Coe 5-4. The Sagehens will return to Claremont for their next doubleheader on Friday, March 11 when they host No. 9 Rochester at 1pm and 3pm.
Game One – CNU 11, Pomona-Pitzer 0
The Captains didn't wait long before striking against the Sagehens. CNU recorded three runs in the first inning before adding two more in the second with a triple and sacrifice fly. A two-run home run increased their lead to 7-0 in the fourth inning before they put the finishing touches on the game with four runs in the fifth inning to earn the 11-0 victory. Pomona-Pitzer saw three hits in total in the contest off the bats of Megan Otsuka, Taylor Lehner, and Deijah Bradley.
Game Two – Coe 5, Pomona-Pitzer 4
The Sagehens got things started quickly in their final game of the tournament as Devin Waddell hit an RBI single to right field to bring in Megan Otsuka. Later in the first inning, Katy Hurley grounded out to short stop, but Waddell was able to score on the play and give the Sagehens the early 2-0 lead. After a scoreless second inning, the Sagehens struck again in the third, this time with Taylor Lehner hitting an RBI single to bring in Waddell and put the Sagehens up 3-0.
The Kohawks were able to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning after hitting a two-RBI homerun to cut the lead to 3-2. In the top of the fifth inning, the Sagehens capitalized on a wild pitch to bring in Lauren Ziment and put Pomona-Pitzer up 4-2. Coe battled right back in the bottom of the inning, hitting an RBI single to center and utilizing a passed ball to tie the game at 4-4. The Sagehens hit three fly balls in both the sixth and seventh inning before the Kohawks hit an RBI single to earn the late 5-4 victory over the Sagehens.
