Pioneers Top Sagehens in Non-Conference Doubleheader

CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team dropped game one of the doubleheader against Lewis and Clark 9-4. The Sagehens tallied six hits in the contest while the Pioneers recorded 16 hits overall, scoring three runs in the second, third, and sixth inning. 

Game One – Lewis and Clark 9, Pomona-Pitzer 4

The Pioneers struck first in the second inning, recording three runs with two RBI singles and a fielder's choice ball that resulted in another run. Lewis and Clark scored three more in the third inning, again hitting to RBI singles and scoring off a fielder's choice ball. The Sagehens were able to cut the lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the third after a Pioneers error and a Taylor Lehner double to left center.

Lewis and Clark hit a solo homerun to start the sixth inning and benefited from a wild pitch that brought in their second run of the inning. The Pioneers tacked on one more with a fly out to left, taking an 8-3 lead over the Sagehens. Pomona-Pitzer answered with one run in the bottom of the seventh. Devin Waddell ripped a ball to left field that looked like it would score multiple runs but the left fielder made a great catch on the ball, allowing just one run to score. The Sagehens were unable to score anymore runs in game one and fell to the Pioneers 9-4.

Game Two - Lewis and Clark 10, Pomona-Pitzer 2

The Sagehens were the first team to get on the board in game two, earning two runs in the first inning. Amanda Robman hit a two-RBI single to give the Sagehens a 2-0 lead, bringing in Megan Otsuka and Devin Waddell. Lewis and Clark quickly answered in the third inning with a solo homerun to cut the lead to 2-1. The game remained at 2-1 until the fifth inning when the Pioneers hit a two-run home run to take the lead at 3-2. The Sagehens struggled to find an answer and the Pioneers rallied in the seventh with seven runs, putting the game out of reach as the Sagehens fell 10-2.
