Box Score ORANGE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Softball team came away with a 9-5 win in a non-conference game against Chapman on Wednesday afternoon at El Camino Real Park.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 9-12 overall.
The Sagehens were led by Katy Hurley who went 3-5 in the win with an RBI and a run scored. Megan Otsuka, Devin Waddell, Taylor Lehner, Julia Carreon, Shelby Hawkes, and Bella Carreon all also contributed with multi-hit performances as the Sagehens tallied 15 hits against the Panthers.
Kailey Newkirk got the start and went 2.2 inning before Emma Holt came in to relieve Newkirk and picked up the win with 2.2 innings pitched while Paige Blackwell ended the came with 1.2 innings of relief work.
The Sagehens jumped out to an early lead as Hurley started off her three-hit night with an RBI double down the line to put Pomona-Pitzer up 1-0. Chapman came back with runs in the second and third inning to take a 3-1 lead, but the Sagehens came back with one in the fourth off of a Hawkes double and then had a huge fifth inning with RBI's from Lehner, Hannah Brajkovic, the Carreon sisters and Otsuka to reclaim the lead at 7-3.
Pomona-Pitzer added two more in the top of the sixth after two RBI singles from Lehner and Julia Carreon to give themselves a little more insurance late in the game at 9-3. The Panthers made it interested as they cut the lead down to 9-5 with two runs in the sixth but Blackwell was able to keep the Panthers away from the lead in the final two inning as the Sagehens held on for the win.
