Sagehens Split with La Verne on Saturday Afternoon

LA VERNE, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team game one of their doubleheader with La Verne 9-4 with 13 hits in the game. Devin Waddell led the team with four hits, two RBIs, and two runs. 

Game One – Pomona-Pitzer 9, La Verne 4

The Sagehens struck first with an RBI single from Shelby Hawkes in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead. Amanda Robman singled through the right side in the third inning to make it 2-0. La Verne answered back in the bottom of the third with an RBI single that tied the game at 2-2. Pomona-Pitzer began to get the bats going in the fourth and fifth inning as Lauren Ziment singled through the right side in the fourth to make it 3-1 in the fourth. In the fifth inning, Ziment walked in a run before Devin Waddell hit a two-RBI single up the middle and Katy Hurley doubled to right field to bring in two more runs and make it 7-1. The Leopards responded with an RBI double and an RBI single to cut the lead to 8-4 in the bottom of the fifth.  

The Sagehens added one more run in the top of the sixth after Megan Otsuka hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Robman and make it 9-4 and earn the victory in game one. 

Game Two - La Verne 10, Pomona-Pitzer 5

Game two featured a neck and neck battle in the first four innings of competition. The Sagehens opened with an RBI single from Katy Hurley to bring in Hannah Brajkovic and take a 1-0 lead. La Verne responded right back in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI single down the left field line to tie things at 1-1. 

The second and third innings were scoreless with La Verne leaving three runners stranded in the bottom of the second. Shelby Hawkes came through for the Sagehens in the fourth inning with an RBI single to center to make it 2-1. The Leopards shot out to a big lead in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single, two-run home run, and a three-run home run to take an 8-2 lead over Pomona-Pitzer. Julia Carreon helped the Sagehens fight back in the top of the sixth inning with a two-RBI double to right field to cut the lead to 8-4. Morgan Groves followed in pursuit with a double to right center to bring in Carreon and make it 8-5. The Leopards were able to get out of the inning and add two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to earn the 10-5 victory. 

What's Up Next

The Sagehens will return to the field on March 1 when they host Bridgewater at 1pm and 3pm.
