Box Score CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer lacrosse team started their 2022 season with a Sixth Street Rivalry victory, defeating CMS 15-7. Sydney Landauer led the Sagehens with five goals and two assists. Maggie Sweeney had four goals on the day while Shoshi Henderson picked up two goals and dished out six assists. Pomona-Pitzer outshot the Athenas 41-16 overall. The Sagehens will be back in action on Saturday when they host the Redlands Bulldogs at 7:00 p.m.
How It Happened
The Sagehens scored early and often against the Athenas with Shoshi Henderson taking a rip and finding the net just over a minute and a half into the game. Maggie Sweeney, Grace Warner, and Caroline Worthington all pitched in with goals of their own to give the Sagehens a 4-0 lead less than five minutes into the contest. Shoshi Henderson found the net again with 7:46 left in the first quarter, striking the back of the net from the left side to make it 5-0. Sweeney picked up her second goal of the goal before Sydney Landauer struck the cage before the end of the first to make it 7-0 heading into the second quarter.
CMS managed to tally two goals in the second, but the Sagehens weren't phased as Landauer, Sweeney and Eloise Cherian all scored goals to increase the lead to 11-2 heading into the halftime break. Out of the break, Landauer scored just 57 seconds into the third quarter to make it 12-2 and give the Sagehens a running clock. Katherine Lin found the net to make it 13-2 just under three minutes later. CMS added three goals to their score to cut the lead to 13-5 heading into the fourth quarter.
The two teams traded goals back and forth in the last quarter with CMS scoring first with 7:04 left to play. Sydney Landauer responded for the Sagehens, netting her fifth goal of the day to make it 14-6. CMS scored once more but Maggie Sweeney scored the final goal of the game to give the Sagehens a 15-7 victory on opening night.
