Box Score CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-12) in the Sixth Street Rivalry against the No. 1 CMS Athenas. Chloe Gill and Paige Wilson led the team's attack as the duo both recorded seven kills. Kylie Mies dished out 13 assists while Lauren Asato anchored the defense with 16 digs. The Sagehens are now 10-6 overall and 5-3 in conference play. Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 11 when they host Whittier at 7:00 p.m.
The Sagehens and Athenas started the night on a wild first point that ended with a Paige Wilson kill to get Pomona-Pitzer up 1-0. Chloe Gill followed in pursuit on the next play with a kill of her own to make it 2-0 but the Athenas surged back with an 8-2 run to take an 8-4 lead. A CMS service error and an attacking error brought the run to an end, but CMS continued to extend their lead with multiple kills, forcing a Sagehen timeout down 15-9. Out of the break, Paige Mountanos recorded a kill, but CMS earned the next three points to make it 18-10. The Sagehens then rallied back with a 7-1 run to cut the lead to two at 19-17 with kills from Chloe Gill, Laurel Park, and Paige Wilson along with a block from Kellan Hayes. From there, the Athenas outscored the Sagehens 6-1 down the stretch to take set one 25-18.
The Athenas carried their momentum into set two, starting the game on an 8-2 run to force an early Sagehen timeout. The break proved useful as Pomona-Pitzer answered with a 7-2 run with kills from Chloe Gill, Paige Wilson, and Laurel Park to cut the deficit to one at 10-9. CMS quickly responded with a 6-2 run to take a 16-11 lead before pushing it to 19-13 to force the Sagehens to call their second timeout. Out of the break, the Sagehens took a 5-3 edge with kills from Gill and Park along with blocks from Fan and Park to cut the lead to 22-18. CMS was able to make a 4-0 run at the end to take the set 25-18.
Despite Paige Wilson earning the first kill of set three, the Athenas went on a 5-1 run to take a 5-2 lead over the Sagehens to start the set. The two teams traded attacks with the Sagehens getting kills from Fan, Hayes, and Mountanos but the Athenas were able to stretch their lead to 16-9 to force the Sagehens to take a timeout. Out of the break, the Athenas continued to pressure the Sagehens, going on a 4-1 run to take a 20-10 lead and force another Sagehen timeout. The Athenas were able to end the set on a 5-2 run to take set three 25-12 and earn the 3-0 sweep over the Sagehens.
