Box Score LOS ANGELES, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer volleyball team extended their win streak to six after taking down the Occidental Tigers 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-23), their fourth sweep in a row. The Sagehens swung at a .200 clip with Chloe Gill leading the attack with 11 kills. Lauren Asato and Paige Wilson shared defensive responsibilities, picking up 12 and 11 digs, respectively. Grace Fan led the team with three solo blocks while assisting on five while Kellan Hayes assisted on seven blocks. Chloe Gill also helped stop the Tigers attack with five block assists and one solo block. Pomona-Pitzer is now 10-7 overall and 6-1 on the season with a Sixth Street Rivalry on the horizon. The Sagehens will take on their rival CMS tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
How It Happened
The Sagehens saw the better side of a 10-4 run in set one with Kellan Hayes, Paige Wilson, and Laurel Park picking up kills. Pomona-Pitzer extended their lead to 15-7 after Naomi Chen-Mallouk and Chloe Gill picked up kills while Paige Wilson recorded a service ace. The two teams traded points briefly until the Tigers went on a 4-0 run, forcing the Sagehens to call a timeout with a 21-15 lead. Out of the break, the Sagehens picked up kills from Paige Wilson and Cameron Hodges, ending the set 25-15.
Set two started in favor of the Tigers with Occidental going on a 9-3 run to take their first lead of the night. Four-straight points from the Sagehens, including two Laurel Park kills, cut the Tigers lead to 9-7. Occidental responded with a 3-0 run to extend their lead to 12-7 but the Sagehens answered right back, recording the next seven points to take a 14-12 lead. Back-and-forth action had the teams tied at 18-18 moments later but a strong surge from the Sagehens gave them a 23-18 lead. The Tigers went on a 4-1 run to put the pressure on the Sagehens but Chloe Gill recorded the final kill as Pomona-Pitzer took set two 25-22.
Set three started much like set two as the Tigers opened the game with a 7-2 run. Pomona-Pitzer earned the next five points with kills from Park and a service ace from Kylie Mies, tying the set at 7-7. Occidental regained the lead at 10-8 but a Kellan Hayes ace along will a Paige Wilson kill put Pomona-Pitzer up 11-10. After regaining the lead at 13-11, the Tigers were able to hold off Pomona-Pitzer's pressure briefly, forcing the game to a tie on three different occasions. With the game at 18-18, the Sagehens were able to break free after two kills from Gill had Pomona-Pitzer up 22-19. A 4-1 Occidental run had the game tied once more at 23-23 but a costly Tiger attack error along with a Chloe Kerstein gave the Sagehens the 25-23 win and their fourth-straight sweep.
