Box Score CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer volleyball team fell to No. 3 CMS 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-15). The Sagehens picked up 29 kills with Chloe Gill leading the attack with nine, swinging at a .222 clip. Kylie Mies and Adrienne Tong each picked up 12 assists but for Tong it was a historic night as she reached the 2,000-assist milestone after dishing out her ninth one of the night, becoming just the seventh Sagehen in program history to reach the mark. The Sagehens will be back in action tomorrow evening at 4:00 p.m. when they take on the Chapman Panthers.
How It Happened
CMS started the match on a 10-4 run, forcing the Sagehens to take a timeout. Out of the break, Pomona-Pitzer went on a 6-2 run with kills from Naomi Chen-Mallouk, Kellan Hayes and a Gaby Harrison service ace to make it 12-10. From there, the Athenas went on a 13-5 run to take set one 25-15.
Set two featured closer play at the start as the Sagehens battled to a slight 5-4 lead thanks to kills from Chloe Gill, Naomi Chen-Mallouk and a service ace from Kylie Mies. CMS took the next six points to take an 11-5 lead. Pomona-Pitzer pilled within five at 15-10 after back-to-back CMS errors before Chloe Kerstein recorded three-straight service aces to pull the Sagehens within two at 15-13 and force a CMS timeout. The Athenas came out of the timeout swinging and went on to take set two 25-17 with a 10-4 run to close it out.
In set three, the Sagehens found themselves with another early lead, this time at 5-3 with kills from Grace Fan, Chen-Mallouk, Paige Wilson, and Kellan Hayes. The set came to a tie at 7-7 after back-and-forth play but CMS quickly stormed out to a large 18-9 lead to force a Sagehen timeout. Out of the break, the Sagehens battled closely with the Athenas, but CMS was on the better side of a 7-6 run that gave them the 25-15 set three victory and 3-0 win on the night.
