Pomona-Pitzer Takes 15-8 Victory At Occidental

Box Score

LOS ANGELES, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Lacrosse team kept their winning streak alive with a 15-8 win at Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Occidental on Saturday morning at Jack Kemp Field.  With the win, the Sagehens stay unbeaten at 7-0, and 6-0 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens were led by Sarah Woo and Caroline Worthington who each tallied three goals in the win.  Emily Vomvas got another win in goal for the Sagehens with seven saves off of 15 shot attempts.

The Tigers had the advantage early on in the game as a few early yellow cards by the Sagehens allowed Occidental to take an early lead.  The Tigers jumped out to a 1-0 lead after a goal off of a free position shot but the Sagehens answered and took over the game with five-straight goals.  Worthington got the goals going for the Sagehens followed by goals from Kate Immergluck and Sarah Casey to take a 3-1 lead.  The Sagehens' offense continued to fire on all cylinders as Woo scored her first goal of the game off of a powerplay and Worthington followed up with her second goal of the day to take a 5-1 lead with 12:29 left to play in the first half.

Occidental broke up the scoring streak by the Sagehens but Eleanor Mackey scored a goal and then assisted Casey to put the Sagehens up 7-2. Occidental answered back with a goal but Mackey wasn't done yet as she scored the final goal of the half to put the Sagehens up 8-3 heading into halftime.

Much like the first half, the Tigers scored the opening goal of the half, but the Sagehens sparked another big run and responded with five-straight goals again. Woo opened up the scoring half for the Sagehens followed by two goals off of free position shots as Eloise Cherian and Maggie Sweeney found the back of the net to push the lead to 11-4. Sweeney doubled up on her goals a few minutes later and Woo completed her hat-trick off of an assist from Mackey to put the Sagehens on top 13-4 with just over 13 minutes remaining.

Pomona-Pitzer built a comfortable lead early in the second half before the Tigers were able to score their first goal of the half to trim the lead down to 13-5, but the Sagehens answered right back from Worthington to go up 14-5.

Occidental scored three of the final four goals of the game as Claire LeBlanc joined the score sheet for the Sagehens, but Pomona-Pitzer was able to ride their big lead on the road for the win.
