Schmidt Walks Off In Game One, Sagehens Split With Rochester

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team split in their double header with non-conference opponent Rochester with a 9-7 win and a 4-0 loss on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. With the split, the Sagehens move to 7-5 overall.

Pomona-Pitzer 9, Rochester 7

The Sagehens were led by David Bedrosian who went 2-3 with two runs scored and three RBI's including the game tying homer in the bottom of the sixth. James Schmidt got his only hit of the game when it mattered most as the first-year had his first collegiate hit as a walk-off home run for the Sagehens. 

The Yellow Jackets got going early in the game and plated four runs in the top of the second with five runs off of a string of extra base hits to play from in front.

Rochester added one more in the top of the fourth off of a solo home run to right field to push their lead to 6-0 over the Sagehens.

Pomona-Pitzer got one run back in the bottom of the fourth after a sacrifice fly from Ryan Nishi, but the Yellow Jackets were gifted a run in their next at-bats with an error from the Sagehens that moved the deficit to 7-1.

The Sagehens battled back in the bottom of the fifth with three runs to get the deficit within reach at 7-4. Jeremiah Quezada doubled home a run followed by an RBI single by Jack Damelio.  The Sagehens got their last run of the inning off of a wild pitch that allowed Jack Hanley to score to come within three runs of Rochester heading into the top of the sixth.

Pomona-Pitzer brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning and Bedrosian tied the game with one swing of the bat after a moon shot to right field brought home three runs and tied the game at 7-7.

After getting a home run to tie the game in the sixth, Schmidt, who entered the game as a defensive replacement, got his first collegiate hit as a walk off, two-run homer to give the Sagehens the win over Rochester, 9-7.

The Sagehens were led by Jeremiah Quezada who went 2-4 in the loss.

Rochester jumped out in front in the top of the second inning off of an RBI single. The Yellow Jackets added two more runs in the top of the fifth off of an RBI ground our and a single to center. Rochester tacked on one more in the eighth on a solo home run to push the lead to 4-0.  The Sagehens had trouble getting runners in scoring position during game two of the double header.  With just five hits in the game, the Sagehens couldn't mount a comeback and fell to the Yellow Jackets 4-0.

The Sagehens will face off against Rochester two more times tomorrow beginning at 11:00 a.m.
