CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer baseball defeated La Verne 8-3 Friday in game one of the two teams' three-game series.
Season Impact: The win puts the Sagehens at 13-6 on the season, including 5-2 in SCIAC play.
Greg Pierantoni led the team offensively with three RBI on two hits, while
Jack Gold added two RBI.
Brody Ruyle,
Kai Gonzaga and
Peter Savas each posted one.
Max Brunngraber (4-0) earned the win from the mound after going 6.0 innings with seven strikeouts and giving up just one earned run.
The Leopards got on the board first with an RBI single in the opening frame. But the Sagehens responded with a run in the bottom of the inning thanks to an RBI sac fly from Gold. Pomona-Pitzer then took control with a five-run second inning. Ruyle, Savas, Gonzaga, Pierantoni and Gold earned RBI in the frame to put the team up 6-1.
Pierantoni blasted a two-run triple to left field in the sixth inning to give the Sagehens a couple of insurance runs and an 8-1 advantage. The Leopards scored a run in the eighth and another in the ninth but it wasn't enough, as Pomona-Pitzer came away with the 8-3 victory.
Up Next: The Sagehens will travel to take on La Verne tomorrow, Saturday, Mar. 21, in a doubleheader with first pitch slated for 11:00 a.m. PT.
