Softball: Sagehens Hit Four Home Runs In 8-4 Win Over Puget Sound

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Softball team earned a win on opening day with an 8-4 victory over non-conference opponent Puget Sound on Friday afternoon at Wig Beach Field.

Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improve to 1-0 to start the season.

The Sagehens were led by junior Karina Falkstrom who went 3-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.  Sophomore Taylor Lehner went 2-4 with three RBI and one run scored while junior Makensey Druckman 2-3 with a run scored as well.  The Sagehens also tallied four home runs in the game as Falkstrom, Lehner, sophomore Katy Hurley and senior Izzy Deatherage all notched their first home runs of the year.  

Sophomore Paige Blackwell earned the win for the Sagehens as she came in relief for senior Alondra Reynoso and went the final 4.2 innings with no runs and five strikeouts.

The Sagehens started out the game on top with two runs in the bottom of the first as Falkstrom singled up the middle to bring in sophomore Megan Otsuka and sophomore Hannah Brajkovich doubled to right field to bring home Deatherage as the Sagehens got to play from in front with a 2-0 lead.

Puget Sound responded in the second and third innings after a two-run homer in the top of the second and an RBI triple in the third put the Loggers on top 3-2.  Puget Sound went on to add one more in the third from an RBI single to push the lead to 4-2.

The Bats came alive for the Sagehens as they went on to plate the next six runs of the game.  Lehner got her first RBI of the year with a single to center field and then back-to-back homers for the Sagehens in the bottom of the fourth from Hurley and Falkstrom put the Sagehens back on top 5-4.

The Sagehens weren't done in the fourth as Lehner capped off the four-run inning with a two-run homer to extend the lead to 7-4 after four innings of play.

Pomona-Pitzer added one more run in the bottom of the fifth after Deatherage blasted a solo shot to centerfield for the Sagehens' fourth homer of the day and pushed the lead to 8-4.

The Loggers put two runners on in the seventh but Blackwell stayed strong on the mound as the Sagehens opened up the season with a win.
