Box Score 2 CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team dropped game on of their doubleheader with Cal Lutheran 5-3. The Regals struck first in the top of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead. The Sagehens responded with one run of their own in the bottom of the second to tie it 1-1 but a three-run homerun from Cal Lutheran in the fifth inning shifted momentum back to the Regals. Izzy Deatherage and Karina Falkstrom both hit RBI singles in the bottom half of the fifth but that would end the scoring for the Sagehens while the Regals added one more in the sixth to win the game 5-3.
The Sagehens earned the victory in game two after recording three runs in the first, one in the third, six in the fourth, and four in the fifth inning. The four run inning came at the hands of Zoey Joshlin who ended the game with a grand slam to mercy rule the Regals. Hannah Brajkovich led the eam with four hits and two runs scored while Karina Falkstrom and Katy Hurley both recorded three hits and three runs.
Game One – Cal Lutheran 5, Pomona-Pitzer 3
As mentioned, the Regals got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Sagehens were held scoreless in the bottom half of the first but they wouldn't be denied in the second. Karina Falkstrom got hit by a pitch to start the inning and later advanced to second after a sacrifice bunt by Olivia Campion. Campion scored after Paige Blackwell ripped a double to left center, tying the game at 1-1.
After a pair of quick scoreless innings, the Regals retook the lead in the top of the fifth inning. The Sagehens walked the first batter of the inning and hit the second batter, setting the stage for Ariana Mendoza. Mendoza stepped to the plate and connected on a three-run home run to take a 4-1 lead over Pomona-Pitzer.
The Sagehens responded in the bottom half of the inning with runs coming from Taylor Lehner and Izzy Deatherage, making it 4-3 in favor of the Regals. Cal Lutheran struck once more in the sixth to take a 5-3 advantage that would hold through the rest of the game.
Game Two – Pomona-Pitzer 14, Cal Lutheran 4
The Sagehens struck first in the first inning with a solo homerun from Taylor Lehner to start game two. Hannah Brajkovich later hit a two-RBI single to center field to give the Sagehens a 3-0 lead at the end of the first. Neither team was able to record a run in the second inning but both the Regals and Sagehens tallied one in the third inning.
The fourth inning proved to be the biggest for the Regals. Cal Lutheran found themselves with bases loaded and earned a run after a long drive to left field. The Regals tallied two more after a Sagehen throwing error brought in two unearned runs to tie the game.
Pomona-Pitzer answered the Regals' run with six runs in the bottom of the fourth. Izzy Deatherage started the scoring after an RBI single brought Taylor Lehner across the plate. Katy Hurley then doubled down the right field line to bring Deatherage home. The Sagehens found themselves with bases loaded and Zoey Joshlin was hit by a pitch, bringing in another run. Makensey Druckman kept it going with an RBI single to left center before Michelle Calcany Blair got walked to continue to add to the score. Taylor Lehner brought in the Sagehens' last run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to center field to make it 10-4.
The Sagehens stranded two Regals in the top of the fifth and got right to work in the bottom half of the inning. Katy Hurley, Karina Falkstrom, and Hannah Brajkovic all singled to load the bases and set Zoey Joshlin up for the fifth inning finale. On her first pitch, Joshlin hit a high flying ball to left center that went right over the fence, ending the game with a walk off grand slam to mercy rule the Regals 14-4 in five innings.
