Big Second Half Propels Sagehens Over Panthers

Box Score

CLAREMONT, CA. --  The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Lacrosse team came away with a 17-6 win over Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC)  opponent Chapman on Wednesday night at Wilson Field.

The Sagehens start their 2020 campaign at 2-0 overall and 2-0 in SCIAC play after their win over the Panthers.

The Sagehens were led by Maggie Sweeney, Sarah Casey, Lily Herrmann and Eleanor Mackey who each had two goals in the win. Emily Vomvas got the win in goal for the Sagehens with 12 saves and six goals allowed.

The Sagehens got out to a good start in the first half with the first three goals of the game to take a 3-0 lead. Kate Immergluck got the scoring going inside the first minute with a goal followed by Eloise Cherian and Casey with goals before the Panthers responded with two of their own to cut the lead down to 3-2. The Sagehens and Panthers went on to alternate goals as Grace Warner and Lily Herrmann found the back of the net to move the score to 5-4 but the Sagehens got the advantage late in the first half with two of the final three goals of the half from Ellie Kruse and Caroline Worthington to take a 7-5 lead heading into halftime.

Much like in their opening game of the year against Redlands, the Sagehens dominated the second half and outscored Chapman 10-1.  The Sagehens opened up the second half with three-straight goals from Kiera Havill, Casey and Sweeney to take a 10-5 lead.  The Panthers answered with their only goal of the half off of a free position shot and the Sagehens ended the game with the final seven goals.

Claire LeBlanc scored an unassisted goal followed by a power play goal by Sweeney and goals from Lily Herrmann and Makcey to extend the lead to 14-6.  The Sagehens went on to end the game with goals from Carly Sullivan, Mackey and Thyra Herrmann to close out a spectacular second half and earn their second win of the season.

The Sagehens will next be in action at home on Saturday, February 22nd as they host Whittier at 11:00 a.m.
