LAX: Sagehens Advance To SCIAC Tournament Final After 17-12 Win Over Oxy

Box Score

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Lacrosse team advanced to the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament Championship after their 17-12 win over Occidental in the SCIAC Semifinals on Wednesday night at the South Athletics Complex.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 13-5 overall

The Sagehens were led by sophomore Kiera Havill who netted a season-high four goals in the win. The Sagehens had two more players earn hat-tricks as sophomore Sarah Woo and senior Lilly Thomey had three goals each as well. First-year Emily Vomvas got the win for the Sagehens in goal as her and junior Annie Price split time. Vomvas had seven saves while Price picked up six saves.

Pomona-Pitzer got out to an incredible start on offense as they kept the ball away from the Tigers with five of the first six draw controls.  The Sagehens didn't waste those opportunities to get ahead as they netted the first seven goals of the game to start with a 7-0 lead. The Tigers broke the goal streak just under nine minutes into the first half with their first goal and went on to alternate goals with the Sagehens as sophomore Kate Immergluck and Thomey netted goals to bring the score to 10-3 with 11:54 left until halftime.

Occidental finished out the end of the first half strong as they began to cut into the Sagehens' lead. The Tigers netted five of the last six goals of the half as Havill scored the only goal for the Sagehens within the last 10 minutes of the half as they went into the break with an 11-8 lead.

The Sagehens tallied the first goal of the second half as Woo netted her second goal of the game off of an assist from Immergluck, but the Tigers scored back-to-back goals to cut the lead down to just two goals at 12-10.

After Oxy cut the lead down to just two, the Sagehens rallied and scored four-straight from Woo, first-year Sarah Casey and sophomore Lily Herrmann to widen the margin to 16-10 with 11:50 left to play. The Sagehens' defense stayed strong late in the second half and held off the Tigers to earn a trip to the SCIAC Championship.

Up Next:  The Sagehens will next face CMS in the SCIAC Championship on Saturday, May 4th at 1:00 p.m. at Zinda Field.
