ORANGE, CA — The Pomona-Pitzer Softball team exploded for 19 hits on their way to a sweep of the Chapman Panthers on the road Saturday afternoon.

Game One: Pomona-Pitzer 4, Chapman 2

Liz Rodarte struck out eight and got the Sagehens out of tough situations late, leading Pomona-Pitzer to a 4-2 win over the Panthers in game one of the doubleheader.

With the game tied at 2-2, after the Panthers evened the game in the sixth, the Sagehens responded with a three hit, two run inning their next time up. Olivia Campion opened up the inning with a single to right field, and then Bianca Cockrell laid down a sacrifice bunt to put pinch runner Rachel Fong on second base.

After pinch hitter Haylee Sindt walked, Alondra Reynoso singled to left field to load the bases. Kristen Hong then singled in Fong to put the Sagehens back up 3-2, taking the lead for good.

Marya Ornelas extended the lead when she grounded out to third base, sending Sindt across to plate for the two run lead. 

The Panthers had a chance in the bottom half of the final inning after a triple by Sarah Sumida put the tying run for Chapman at the plate. But Rodarte struck out the next batter for the win.

The Sagehens took the opening lead in the top of the third when Sofia Baig scored from third on a wild pitch. Pomona-Pitzer went up 2-0 when Rodarte singled to left to score Hong. 

Hong lead the Sagehens with two hits, a RBI, and a run scored. Maddy Kim, Izzy Deatherage, and Ornelas each added a hit.

Game Two: Pomona-Pitzer 7, Chapman 3

The Sagehens took the lead in the fourth with a five run inning on their way to winning their second game on the road.

Pomona-Pitzer was led at the plate by Maddy Kim and Marya Ornelas. Kim finished the game two for three at the plate with a triple, three RBI, and a run scored. Ornelas finished the day three for four at the plate.

In the top of the fourth inning with one out, the bases loaded, and the Sagehens trailing 2-1, senior Sofia Baig singled to center field, bringing in Liz Rodarte to tie the game a 2-2. Then Kim stepped in and tripled down the left field line to score Olivia Campion, Bianca Cockrell, and Baig, taking a 5-2 lead the Sagehens would never give up. 

Kim added another run when she scored on a wild pitch. Pomona-Pitzer finished the inning with six hits. 

Freshman Alondra Reynoso earned the win, pitching three and a third innings of relief while striking out three. Cockrell got the start for Pomona-Pitzer, striking out one. 

After Chapman took the first lead of the game in the first inning, Campion brought in Izzy Deatherage on a sacrifice fly to center field. The Sagehens added another run in the fifth when Deatherage scored on a passed ball.

Campion turned in two hits in the game, and Rodarte, Deatherage, Cockrell each added one hit. 

Season Impact: Pomona-Pitzer improves to 9-21 overall and 5-12 in SCIAC play. The Panthers fall to 13-13 overall and 7-9 in conference play.

Next Game: The Sagehen head down Arrow Highway next Friday for a doubleheader against the La Verne Leopards beginning at 2 p.m.
