Softball: Sagehens Hold Off Loggers for 5-2 Win

CLAREMONT, CA. – Liz Rodarte finished the day with four hits and struck out nine, and the Pomona-Pitzer Softball team split games with the Puget Sound Loggers Friday afternoon.

Season Impact: The Sagehens move to 2-2 on the year. The Loggers start the year 1-1.

Game Two: Sagehens 5, Loggers 2

The Sagehens scored two early and never looked back, taking game two of the doubleheader.

With Marya Ornelas advancing to third after a wild pitch and Kristen Hong on second, Liz Rodarte singled to the right side to give Pomona-Pitzer the early 1-0 advantage. Rodarte currently leads the Sagehens with four RBI and six hits in the young season. She played hero on opening day, hitting a three-run walk off home run to beat Pacific Lutheran 5-4.

Later in the inning with Rodarte on third, freshman Olivia Campion hit a shot to the shortstop and brought in Rodarte, extending the lead to 2-0.

The Sagehens put the game away in the bottom of the sixth with a three run inning. Izzy Deatherage got the rally started with a single to left field that scored Maddy Kim and pinch runner Missy Pekarek. Later with the bases loaded, Sofia Baig singled to shallow left field to bring home Deatherage.

The Sagehens finished the inning with six hits.

Rodarte was outstanding in the circle for the Sagehens. She went the distance, struck out 4, with just five hits, and no earned runs. Offensively she finished the game with three hits. 

Sam Carlson also had a multi-hit game, finishing with two. Natalie Ireland, Emily Rockhill, Hong, Campion, and Ornelas each had a hit. 

Game One: Loggers 5, Sagehens 0

Liz Rodarte struck out five, but the Sagehens couldn't get any offense going, dropping game one of the doubleheader to Puget Sound.

Rodarte stepped in for three and a third innings of relief, giving up just two hits and one run in her outing. 

Marya OrnelasKristen HongSam CarlsonMaddy Kim, and Kelsey Buchanan each added a hit for the Sagehens.

Jessica Gott gave the Loggers a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when she hit a fly ball to shallow right field just out of the reach of the diving Ornelas, bringing home Jaci Young.

The Loggers added another run in the third, two in the fourth, and one more in the sixth. 

Alondra Reynoso got the start in the circle for Pomona-Pitzer, striking out two but took the loss.

Next Game: The Sagehens open SCIAC play next Saturday, February 18 when they host the Chapman Panthers in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
