Volleyball: Sagehens Sweep Redlands, Improve to 3-0

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Vicky-Marie Addo-Ashong made big plays in key moments, Julia Zwaal put down 14 kills and had 15 digs, and the Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team swept the Redlands Bulldogs, 27-25, 27-25, 25-23. 

The Sagehens have won their first three SCIAC games with a combined score of 9-1.

Season Impact: The Sagehens stay perfect in the SCIAC with a 3-0 record and improve to 7-4 overall. They remain in a three-way tie for first place with No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and No. 4 Cal Lutheran. The win marks seven-straight wins over the Bulldogs.

Redlands drops to 8-4 overall and 1-3 in SCIAC play.

First Set: Pomona-Pitzer 27, Redlands 25

After falling behind 4-0 to start the set, the Sagehens stormed back to tie the game at 8-all after Jessica Finn dished the ball to Addo-Ashong for the kill, taking their first lead, 12-11.

Pomona-Pitzer rallied to set-point at 24-18 but the Bulldogs held strong evening the score at 24-24. 

The Sagehens caught a break on a service error by Lauren Lux to regain the lead, 26-25, and then put the set away on a block by Sarah Gamble and Isabel Kelly. Kelly and Gamble each had five total blocks in the match.

Second Set: Pomona-Pitzer 27, Redlands 25

After falling behind 24-21, the Sagehens rallied behind Julia Zwaal who had eight of her 14 kills in the second set.

She rallied off three huge kills to tie the game at 24-24, to put Pomona-Pitzer up 25-24, and then again to take a 26-25 lead. 

An attack error from the Bulldogs sealed the set win for the Sagehens.

Third Set: Pomona-Pitzer 25, Redlands 23

Addo-Ashong, Kate Porter, and Christine Covode came in big for the Sagehens combining for 10 kills in the set. Pomona-Pitzer jumped ahead to a 15-9 lead before Redlands rallied to cut the Sagehens advantage to 19-18.

But the Sagehens extended the lead on a key kill by Gamble, and Kelly finished the game with a kill to give Pomona-Pitzer the win.

Jackie Roland led the Sagehens with 16 assists, Finn followed behind with 13. Addo-Ashong, Porter, Covode, and Kelly each had six kills.

Sophie Janssen led all players with 17 digs and also added four assists.

Next Match: Pomona-Pitzer heads to Orange tomorrow for a 4 p.m. game against the Chapman Panthers.
