LAX: Pomona-Pitzer Falls To Cortland 21-7 In Sweet Sixteen Of NCAA Tournament

CORTLAND, N.Y --The Pomona-Pitzer women's lacrosse team fell in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament to the No. 1 ranked defending National Champions, SUNY Cortland, by the score of 21-7 on Saturday afternoon at Stadium Red.

The Sagehens were led by freshman Lily Thomey who tallied a hat-trick with three goals. Junior Rebecca Long chipped in with two goals in the loss for the Sagehens.

Cortland was led by Ashley Gentile who scored a game-high five goals.

The Red Dragons started out with a three goal lead as they jumped on top early in the first half. Long scored the first goal of the game for the Sagehens as she found the back of the net off of a pass from freshman Amelia Miller as the Sagehens trailed 3-1.

Cortland responded with a goal just over 30 seconds later by Ashley Gentile but Pomona-Pitzer answered with a Thomey goal off of an assist from senior Sarah Markowitz to cut the lead down to 4-2.

Ohberg came back to score two-straight goals to extend the Cortland lead to 6-2 but Pomona-Pitzer rallied to score three of the next four goals coming from Markowitz, Long and Thomey to cut the Red Dragons' lead down to 7-5.

After cutting the lead down to two goals, Cortland went on six-goal streak to end the half and led 13-5 heading into the locker room.

The second half belonged to the Red Dragons as they outscored the Sagehens 8-2. Cortland opened up the second half with two-straight goals before senior Katie Savino scored her first goal of the game off of a pass from Markowitz to make the score 15-6.

Thomey ended up with the last goal of the day for the Sagehens as she found the back of the net for her third goal of the game off of an assist from Markowitz.

Pomona-Pitzer ends their season in the third round of the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight season and made the tournament three-straight years.

The Sagehens end the year with a 16-4 record and Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champions.
