Softball: Pomona-Pitzer Splits With Lewis & Clark; Gets First Win Of The Year

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team split with Lewis & Clark as they lost the first game 4-3 and won their first game of the year in game two by the score of 5-4.

Lewis & Clark got on the board first in the top of the third inning after a costly error led to runners on second and third with nobody out. The Pioneers strung together a few hits in the inning and put up four runs to take an early lead.

The Sagehens responded in the bottom half of the inning as Sam Carlson drove in Aryana Yee and Sofia Baig followed that up with an RBI single to bring home Liz Rodarte as Pomona-Pitzer cut the lead down to 4-2.

Baig added one more RBI in the bottom of the fifth as she singled home Rodarte again to cut the deficit down to just one run at 4-3.

The Sagehens had a chance in the bottom of the seventh as two-straight Pioneer errors gave Pomona-Pitzer runners on second and third with no one out. Lewis & Clark manufactured three-straight outs and avoided the Sagehens' comeback as they took game one of the double header.

Pomona-Pitzer took their first lead of the season in the bottom of the third of game number two as Susanne Boden drove home Yee on an RBI single to give the Sagehens a 1-0 lead.

Lewis & Clark responded in the very next inning as Norton drove home Rojo on a sacrifice fly to even the score up at 1-1 going into the bottom of the fourth.

Kelsey Buchanan came up in the next inning with bases loaded and grounded into a fielder's choice but drove in the go ahead run to put Pomona-Pitzer on top 2-1.

The Pioneers would answer back for the second-straight time as Juarez doubled in two runs and Lewis & Clark took their first lead of the game at 3-2 in the fifth inning.

It was the Sagehens turn to answer in the bottom of the fifth as Emily Rockhill socked a double into right field and drove home Baig and Paige Oliver as Pomona-Pitzer reclaimed the lead at 4-3.

Oliver gave the Sagehens a little insurance in the top of the seventh as she drilled an RBI double in the gap as Pomona-Pitzer went into the top of the seventh with a 5-3 lead.

The Pioneers answered with one run in the seventh but it wasn't enough as Rodarte closed out the Pioneers and the Sagehens won their first game of the year.

The Sagehens next take the field as they host Whitworth for a double header on Saturday, February 20th starting at 12:00 p.m.
