Box Score WHITTIER, Calif. – Corey Goelz made incredible saves, and the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team earned a hard fought 1-0 win on the road at Whittier Saturday night.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens bring their point total to 26 and clinch a spot in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament.
Pomona-Pitzer extends their win streak to six games, and have not been scored on during the stretch. The Sagehens remain in first place and undefeated in the SCIAC with a record of 8-0-2 and improve to 10-1-2 overall.
Whittier falls to 4-6-4 overall and 2-5-3 in SCIAC play
The Sagehens scored the only goal of the game 38 minutes into the the match, when Lindsay Piwinski gathered the ball near the left sideline and sent into the box. Natasha Thornton-Clark connected on a header and found the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
The goal moves Thornton-Clark's season total to three goals. This was Piwinski's first assist of the year.
Senior goalkeeper Goelz recorded five saves in her fifth straight complete game shutout.
She made two huge game saving saves midway through the first half to keep the Poets off the board. The first came after a Whittier attacker crossed the ball deep into the box where a waiting Leila Afrasiyabi had a point blank shot. But Goelz made a spectacular diving save to end the threat.
Less than a minute later, Whittier forward Lauren Kai had a breakaway and sent a hard shot to the left side of the goal only to be met by a diving Goelz for the save. Goelz leads the SCIAC with a .951 save percentage.
Goelz was aided by the Sagehens backline featuring Jamie Kerester, Nadia Alaiyan, Brianna Lau, and Molly Mosher who limited the Poets to just six shots in the game.
Next Match: The Sagehens return home next Wednesday in an important match-up against third place Cal Lutheran. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Stadium.
