Box Score Claremont, Calif. - Freshman midfielder Sallie Marx (pictured) and junior attacker Aubrey Douglass each had three goals as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Lacrosse team earned a 10-9 win over Occidental on Wednesday evening to remain in first place in the SCIAC.
With the win, the Sagehens are now 9-3 overall on the season and 6-1 in league play and have a two-game lead for first place with three left to play in the regular season (CMS, Redlands and Chapman are all tied at 4-3). Occidental falls to 7-5 overall and 3-4 in the conference with the loss.
Marx carried the load for the Sagehens in the first half, scoring three of her team's four goals as the two teams went into the locker room tied 4-4. The teams then traded goals for the first 15 minutes of the second half, with Douglass adding her second and third, before the game was knotted up with 16:45 left on a goal from Occidental's Sierra Slack, making the score 7-7.
Sophomore attacker Hannah Christenson, though, had back to back goals 43 seconds apart to give Pomona-Pitzer its first two-goal lead of the day at 9-7 with 15:37 to go. Mackenzie Wright twice brought Occidental back within a goal in the final 10 minutes, the second time with exactly 3:00 left after Ally McLaughlin had a goal on a free position shot to make it 10-8.
However, McLaughlin won the ensuing draw control and the Sagehens were able to kill most of the remaining clock. Occidental did have one last chance, but the ball was checked free by senior defender Brenna Gormally, junior midfielder Katie Savino scooped it up, and Marx ran out the clock on a clear.
Douglass added two assists to give her a game-high five points, McLaughlin had nine draw controls, and sophomore goalie Gaby Fukumura had five saves to get the win in net. Slack had three goals and one assist, while goalie Adrienne Ruth had nine saves.
Pomona-Pitzer is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Chapman for an 11 a.m. contest.
