Sagehens Hold On For Road Win At Redlands

Box Score

Redlands, Calif. -  The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Lacrosse team scored the first four goals of the second half to take a 10-6 lead and held on for a 10-9 win over Redlands in a SCIAC contest on Wednesday evening.

With the win, the Sagehens improve to 4-1 on the season, all against conference opponents, with the only defeat coming in overtime to CMS. Redlands falls to 2-2 overall and 2-1 in the SCIAC with the loss.

Sophomore attack Rebecca Long (pictured) had a career-high five goals on the night to lead the Pomona-Pitzer offense, while junior attack Sarah Markowitz had three goals and freshman midfielder Sallie Marx had two.

Pomona-Pitzer used a 4-0 run to start the second half, turning a 6-6 tie into a 10-6 lead. Long broke the tie to give the Sagehens the lead for good, and Markowitz then scored three straight goals, the last two on free position shots, to stretch the lead to four goals with 19:55 left in the contest.

Redlands, though, was able to battle back to within 10-9 on a man-up goal from Stephanie Garrett with 8:08 left. The Bulldogs got another man-up when Long had her sixth goal of the game waved off for a dangerous follow through with just over five minutes left, but the Sagehens were able to kill off the penalty and nearly run out the entire clock.

After several minutes of chasing, Redlands was finally able to force a turnover along the sideline, and call a timeout in Pomona-Pitzer's end with 17 seconds left.  However, Garrett was pressured well by the Sagehen defense, and her shot from distance was saved by sophomore goalie Gaby Fukumura in the final seconds.

The first half was a see-saw affair that saw the Sagehens have the only two-goal lead, a 6-4 advantage with just over 10 minutes left. Long scored her fourth of the half to give Pomona-Pitzer a 5-4 lead, and Marx followed with her second to make it 6-4. However, Redlands had back-to-back goals to close out the half and level the score 6-6 heading into intermission.

Fukumura finished with 10 saves for Pomona-Pitzer, the tenth of which sealed the win and prevented the two teams for going to overtime for the fourth time in the last two years (including twice in the regular season last year, and once in the SCIAC finals). Two Redlands goalies combined to make just four saves.

The Sagehens will have two weeks off before their next contest, a home Spring Break contest against SUNY New Paltz on March 17 at 11 a.m.
