Carlson Grand Slam Keys Sagehen Rout

Box Score

Claremont, Calif. - Freshman Sam Carlson (pictured) hit a first-inning grand slam, her sixth homer of the year, to send the Pomona-Pitzer Softball team to a 10-1 win over Grinnell on Friday afternoon in a non-league contest.

Senior Ashley Morello was 3-for-3 with a triple and a two-run single and freshman Kelsey Buchanan was also 3-for-3 for the Sagehens, who improve to 8-12 overall with the win. Grinnell falls to 0-5 on the season with the loss.

Morello led off the game with a triple and was driven home by an RBI single from senior Leah Bleichner. Two batters later, Carlson stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and drilled a pitch over the fence for a quick 5-0 lead.

That was plenty of offense for sophomore pitcher Bianca Cockrell, who allowed only one bunt single over four innings, while striking out seven. Grinnell was able to close to 8-1, but freshman Natalie Ireland and sophomore Quinn Sheehy added RBI singles in the fourth to push it to 10-1 and enforce the eight-run rule after five innings.

Pomona-Pitzer is back in action tomorrow for a SCIAC doubleheader at Occidental, beginning at 12 p.m.
