Box Score Colorado Springs, Colo. - The Wesleyan Women's Lacrosse team scored twice in the final minute of regulation to tie the score and prevailed in sudden death overtime, earning a 12-11 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Thursday afternoon at Colorado College.
With the loss, the Sagehens slip to 5-2 on the season, with both losses coming in overtime. Wesleyan improves to 3-4 with the win.
Sophomore Hannah Christenson (pictured) had five goals for Pomona-Pitzer to lead the offense, while Leah Sherman had six for Wesleyan, including a goal with 40 seconds left in regulation to pull the Cardinals within 10-9, and then the game-winner 41 seconds into sudden death.
The Sagehens led 5-3 at the half and had three-goal leads on four occasions in the second half, the last of which came at 10-7 on a Christenson goal with 8:44 left on a feed from sophomore Rebecca Long. Liana Mathias answered 26 seconds later for Wesleyan to make the score 10-8, which is where it held until the last minute, when Sherman was able to cut it to a single goal with 40 seconds left.
Sherman then won the ensuing draw control to give the Cardinals a chance to tie, and they took advantage as Emily Gretsky found the net with just 16 seconds left. Christenson won the next draw control, but Pomona-Pitzer was unable to get a shot off in the final seconds.
Wesleyan went ahead with a man-up goal from Sherman, but Christenson answered back a minute later to tie the score 11-11. Nina Labovich came up with a save with 30 seconds left in overtime off a shot from Aubrey Douglass, and sophomore Gaby Fukumura sent the game into sudden death with a save in the final seconds. Wesleyan, though, won the draw control to start sudden death overtime, and Sherman scored an unassisted goal just 41 seconds in to give the Cardinals the win.
Long finished with three goals and an assist for Pomona-Pitzer, junior Ally McLaughin had two goals, and Douglass had a game-high four assists. Fukumura finished with nine saves on the day for the Sagehens.
Pomona-Pitzer is back in action tomorrow to face Skidmore in its second game of its Spring Break trip at Colorado College, before facing the hosts on Sunday.
