Lacrosse Falls to No. 9 Amherst, 11-7

CLAREMONT, CA – The Pomona-Pitzer women's lacrosse team put up an admirable effort but fell 11-7 to Amherst College on Thursday.
 
Season Impact: With the loss, Pomona-Pitzer continues their season at 8-1 overall and 5-0 in SCIAC play.
 
The Sagehens were led by Carly Katzman and Taylor Glanville, who each picked up two goals throughout the match. Madeleine Trapp, Birdie Hawkins, and Piper Higgins also contributed to the scoring wit one each.
 
Pomona-Pitzer started the match off well and earned six goals in the first half – two in the first and four in the second quarter. Amherst struck first and earned an early goal, but then Trapp responded and picked up one with 10:35 left in the first period. Glanville followed by scoring a goal at the 4:58 mark to put the Sagehens ahead. Pomona-Pitzer finished the first quarter ahead of the Mammoths 2-1.

Amherst struck early again in the second quarter, but Katzman soon earned earned a goal to keep the Sagehen lead with 12:44 left in the period. Katzman then picked up another one at the 9:15 mark, and Higgins followed and scored a goal at the 8:02 mark. The Mammoths managed to break past the Pomona-Pitzer defenses to score, but Glanville collected one more with 6:57 left in the quarter. Despite the effective offensive attacks from the opposing team, The Sagehens kept their lead and entered halftime ahead 6-4.  
 
The Sagehens continued playing hard and put up a good effort through the end of the match. Amherst struck first in the third quarter, but Hawkins soon found a goal from a free position shot with 8:11 left in the period. However, The Mammoths found more opportunities to score and caught up to Pomona-Pitzer. The Sagehens ended the third quarter tied 7-7.
 
Pomona-Pitzer was pressured by Amherst throughout the fourth quarter. While the Sagehens had opportunities to reclaim the lead, a series of turnovers and fouls for Pomona-Pitzer allowed the Mammoths to surge ahead. Despite the strong efforts on all fronts, the Sagehens fell to Amherst 11-7.
