CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 15 Sagehens defeated Colorado College 13–6 on Friday evening.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens remain unbeaten at 7–0 overall and 5–0 in SCIAC play.
Pomona-Pitzer was led by Piper Higgins, who recorded a hat trick. ZZ Sayeed added a multi-goal performance with two, while Maria Favret, Gwynn Sullivan, Madeliene Trapp, Catherine Faucette, Miahue Miranda Wiltberger, Nora Leblanc, Caili Cross and Carly Katzman each contributed a goal in the victory.
The Sagehens opened the game strong, scoring five goals in the first half - two in the opening period and three in the second. Sullivan got Pomona-Pitzer on the board early with 13:38 remaining in the first quarter. Colorado College quickly responded to tie the game, but Miranda Wiltberger restored the lead with 9:11 left in the period. The Tigers answered with two late goals to take a 3–2 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Pomona-Pitzer regained momentum in the second period. Higgins tied the game with 7:11 remaining during a player advantage, and Favret followed with another man-up goal at the 3:01 mark to give the Sagehens a 4–3 lead. Colorado tied the score once again before Sayeed scored in the final minutes of the half, sending Pomona-Pitzer into the break with a 5–4 advantage.
The Sagehens took control in the second half. Higgins opened the third-quarter scoring with 6:36 left on the clock, and Katzman followed just a minute later to extend the lead to 7–4. Sayeed added another player-advantage goal as Pomona-Pitzer held Colorado scoreless for the remainder of the quarter, carrying an 8–4 lead into the final period.
Higgins struck again early in the fourth quarter with 12:14 remaining, and Cross added another to build the Sagehen lead. After Colorado found the back of the net, Trapp and Leblanc scored goals at the 6:40 and 5:25 marks, respectively, pushing Pomona-Pitzer ahead 12–5. The Tigers managed one more goal late, but Faucette sealed the victory with a player-advantage goal as the Sagehens secured the 13–6 win.
