Claremont, Calif. - The No. 7-ranked Carnegie Mellon Women's Tennis team won the final three singles decisions to come from behind and take a 5-4 win over No. 8 Pomona-Pitzer on Thursday evening in a battle of top 10 teams at Pauley Tennis Complex.
The loss drops the Sagehens to 4-2 on the season, with both losses coming to teams ranked ahead of them (including No. 2 Amherst). Carnegie Mellon improves to 9-3 with the win.
Freshman Grace Hruska (pictured) won in both singles and doubles for the Sagehens, teaming with junior Lea Lynn Yen for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles and then capturing a quick 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles to give Pomona-Pitzer a 3-2 lead (after Bryn Raschke won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 to tie the score for the Tartans). Freshman Shivani Doraiswami followed with a win at No. 2 singles (6-2, 6-2) to push Pomona-Pitzer's lead to 4-2.
However, Carnegie Mellon won the last three decisions as Vanessa Pavia fought off a late rally from Yen at No. 1 in the second set to win 6-2, 6-4. Brooke Tsu outlasted freshman Emily Kuo in three sets, winning the last three points in the third set for a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win.
That brought the match down to No. 3 singles, where Emily Chen picked up a key break to stay in the match at 5-5. However, Nicholle Torres broke back and then used a big serve up 40-15 and followed in behind it with a forehand winner to clinch the match for the Tartans (4-6, 6-2, 7-5).
Freshman Maryann Zhao and junior Maddie Gordon gave Pomona-Pitzer the swing point in doubles with an 8-6 win at No. 3 over Tsu and Torres. Pavia and Stacy Chang won at No. 2 for Carnegie Mellon (8-3) after Yen and Hruska took the first point at No. 1.
Pomona-Pitzer is back in action on Sunday when it hosts No. 6 Bowdoin in another top 10 battle.
