Sagehens Run Away In Game Two To Salvage Split At La Verne

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

La Verne, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Softball team took an 11-2 five-inning win in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday evening, salvaging a split at La Verne in a SCIAC twinbill.

Junior shortstop Aryana Yee (pictured) was 3-for-4 with two RBI in the nightcap, and 6-for-8 in the doubleheader, to help Pomona-Pitzer earn its split and move to 6-9 overall and 2-4 in the SCIAC. La Verne, which rallied from a 5-0 deficit to win the opener 9-5, moves to 8-8 overall and 4-4 in conference play.

In the nightcap, the Sagehens broke the game open with a five-run third inning to take a 7-0 lead, capped off by Yee's two-run single. Freshmen Natalie Ireland and Kelsey Buchanan added RBI singles earlier in the inning. After La Verne got two runs back in the fourth on a home run, freshman Sam Carlson hit her fifth round-tripper of the year to make it 8-2, and Pomona-Pitzer scored three more in the fifth to make it 11-2 and enforce the eight-run rule.

Carlson, Ireland and Buchanan were each 2-for-3 in the nightcap, as the Sagehens pounded out 12 hits in five innings.  Sophomore Eden Griffen went the distance to get the win in the circle to improve to 3-2 on the year.

Pomona-Pitzer also got off to a quick start in the first game, as a two-run homer from Ireland and a solo shot from Emily Rockhill in the third inning put the Sagehens ahead 4-0. After Pomona-Pitzer added another run on an error in the top of the fourth, La Verne came back with the long ball as Mackenzie Dutton had a solo shot in the bottom of the fourth, Alexis Schiff tied it with a two-run homer in the fifth, and Tori Baltazar broke the tie with a three-run homer in the sixth.

Yee was 3-for-4 in the opener as well for the Sagehens, the first half of a 6-for-8 day, while Rockhill was 2-for-3. Schiff was 3-for-4 for La Verne with three RBI.

Pomona-Pitzer is back in action next weekend for a road doubleheader against Chapman, beginning at 12 noon.
