Box Score CLAREMONT, CA: With their backs against the wall only minutes into the match, Pomona-Pitzer would ride the momentum of a huge first set rally to sweep Redlands 3-0 on Tuesday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
While the Bulldogs (5-16, 1-9 SCIAC) jumped out of the gates quickly to race ahead 15-5, the Sagehens (10-11, 5-6 SCIAC) would go on a 20-9 run and 7-1 run over the last eight points to take the first set 26-24. Pomona-Pitzer rode this momentum the rest of the match, playing with a high level of confidence and scoring at a torrid pace to take the final two sets 25-16 and 25-16. The Sagehens' offense would overcome the slow start to fire on all cylinders the rest of the way, posting their highest kill percentage (.222) over the past six matches and third lowest amount of attack errors all season (14). With the win, Pomona-Pitzer moves back into a tie for sixth in the SCIAC and remains only one game back of fourth place with five matches left to play.
Stephanie Sun (pictured) continued to add to her strong junior campaign, posting a game-high 12 kills to go along with 14 digs and one service ace on the evening. Pomona-Pitzer would have a balanced offensive attack from five players to support Sun, as Freshman Sophie Janssen and Sophomore Kate Porter would each register five kills while Senior Emma Burdekin, Junior Sarah Gamble, and Freshman Julie Zwaal would add four kills apiece. Senior Michelle Schultz extended her conference-leading total to 438 digs with 20 more against the Bulldogs, pushing her streak to now six games with at least 15 digs. Schultz also ranks first in the SCIAC averaging 5.67 digs per set, good enough for Top 20 among all Division III players. Jessica Finn also stayed in pursuit of the conference assists crown, adding 32 assists to remain in second place in the SCIAC with 717 total assists and 9.43 assists per set.
"I can't say how proud I am of the composure the girls showed tonight" said Head Coach Valerie Townsend. "To come back from down 15-5 to win the first set is something special and really shows there's something to the competitive fire we've seen in them in flashes this season. I thought we executed very well to close out the last two sets and played with solid chemistry and intensity. There's something to be said about the effects of a good team win, and I think this is just what we needed to get right back into the [SCIAC] mix over these last two weeks."
The Sagehens will be back in action on Saturday as they will take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 12pm in Voelkel Gymnasium before heading down 210 to take on Caltech at 6pm. Live coverage for the CMS game can be found on the Pomona-Pitzer Athletics Website.
