Claremont, Calif. - The Redlands Women's Tennis team won all six singles lines as it captured a 7-2 win over Pomona-Pitzer in the third-place match of the SCIAC Tournament on Saturday.
With the loss, the Sagehens drop to 15-7 on the season and end in fourth place in the SCIAC Tournament, dropping their league record to 8-3 on the year.
Sammy Chao (pictured foreground) and Lea Lynn Yen (background) won an 8-6 decision at No. 1 doubles and the freshman combo of Rosemary Pelch and Maddie Gordon won at No. 3 doubles 8-5 to give the Sagehens a 2-1 lead.
However, singles went the way of the Bulldogs, as Pelch was forced to retire from the match at No. 6. Ceara Sumida won at No. 3 and Jessica Ly earned a win at No. 1 to give Redlands a 4-2 lead, and Natalie Etchegaray was able to provide the clincher at No. 2, taking the first set tiebreaker 8-6 and then winning the second set 6-1.
Gordon and senior Claire Willey won their first sets at No. 4 and No. 5 but ended up falling in three sets, with Willey going to a third set tiebreaker (which Emily Murnin won 7-4).
Pomona-Pitzer came into the SCIAC Tournament ranked No. 6 nationally and should still have a solid chance for an at-large bid to the NCAA Regionals, which will take place next week.
